Rack-it-Launcher

Kids Bike rack

3 WEEKS - COLLABORATED WITH 3 OTHER STUDENTS

Our goal was to create a children's bike rack that was fun and unique. We were restricted to using metal tubing in order to learn how to evaluate the nature of specific materials and the possible manufacturing methods for those materials.

Space theme

We agreed that space is about as interesting and unique as it gets. From there we continued to brain storm ideas that were inspired from what first came to mind when we thought of space.

Inspiration

What is the coolest part about space? The answer, blast off! As a kid watching your first rocket ship take off has you pretending to be an astronaut for the next couple weeks. So how could we emulate lift off for a kid and their bike?

Techniques....

  • Removed rust and spurs from metal tubing using files and low grit sand paper

  • Bent tubing using a rotary draw bending technique

  • Sand blasted tubing closer to the final product to smooth out tubing surfaces

  • Welded tubing together to make tighter radii possible
